BIRDWATCHING

Welcome to our first blog entry! We decided that this would be a fun and easy way to share our California adventures with family and friends. So, please be patient with us as we learn how to make this an enjoyable road map of our journeys through San Diego and beyond.

Recently, we had a lovely finch couple decide that they wanted to "nest" on our patio. So, three days later they built a pretty little nest and moved in to lay and hatch their eggs. We have climbed the ladder (quietly) in order to see into Mama's nest and see how she is doing. Unfortunately, she has figured out what we are doing and we have only been able to have one encounter with her. Oh, well, we know she is there and we expect to hear babies cheeping loudly soon. Will keep you posted on their progress.

Another fun thing we have been talking about for a while is birdwatching. So, today we headed for the library and checked out some informative books on this new hobby. Birdwatching for Dummies has already become a favorite, but takes a back seat to Birdwatching in Southern California. This very informative book took us to the Tijuana Slough in Imperial Beach. After a 1.5 mile walk down the beach (towards Tijuana) we were delighted to view hundreds of birds nesting near and on the Tijuana River. (The buildings in the background are in Tijuana).

We were treated to Blue Herons, Terns, Ducks, Pelicans, Seagulls and others that we have not learned their names yet. But we will!

As we were walking down the beach, we could see the U.S./Mexico Border fence in the distance. Next to that was the bull ring. We couldn't believe how close we really were to Mexico, but the view was beautiful and the walk on the beach was spectacular. (Check out this picture--that is Mexico and the bull ring.)

One of our most favorite pictures was the ones we took of the pelicans as they flew above us (and very, very close). Rhonda would hold the camera and Michael would say NOW since we couldn't see what we were taking the picture of because it was so bright. Obviously we did something right and hope you enjoy this picture of these very graceful pelicans flying over us.

We hope you enjoy our first blogging experience and will join us again as we share our adventures...both in San Diego and in Phoenix with the Hoover clan--Isabella, Michally, Eric and Sadie Marie. Hope you will find time to visit us in Chula Vista and share some of these experiences with us.
